After months of disruption caused by severe storms earlier this year, train services on the Beira Baixa Line are expected to return between September and October, according to the Secretary of State for Infrastructure.
The announcement offers welcome news for residents, students and businesses across the Beira Baixa, where the railway provides a vital link between the region and Lisbon.
Although no firm reopening date has yet been confirmed, the Government says repair work is progressing well and that normal rail services should resume this autumn.
Months of Disruption
The Beira Baixa Line has been partially closed since Storm Martinho caused extensive damage to the railway infrastructure in February.
Since then, passengers travelling between Abrantes and Guarda have had to complete part of their journey by replacement coach services, adding time and inconvenience to journeys through the region.
The disruption has particularly affected regular commuters, University of Beira Interior (UBI) students, tourists and residents who rely on the railway for travel to Lisbon and other parts of Portugal.
Repairs Progressing Faster Than Expected
Speaking this week, the Secretary of State for Infrastructure said repair work is advancing well and that the line is now expected to reopen during September or October, earlier than some previous estimates.
While the exact reopening date will depend on the completion of engineering works and final safety approvals, the announcement provides the clearest indication yet that rail services are nearing their return.
An Important Route for Beira Baixa
The Beira Baixa Line is one of the region's most important transport links, connecting communities including Castelo Branco, Fundão, Covilhã and Belmonte with the national rail network.
