Castelo Branco is set to expand its sporting infrastructure with the construction of a new multi-purpose sports hall at the city's Zona de Lazer, following the approval of a public tender worth more than €4 million.
The new facility will form part of the existing leisure and sports complex and is intended to provide modern facilities for local sports clubs, schools and community groups, while also increasing the city's ability to host sporting events.
A Major Investment in Local Sport
The municipality has approved a public tender with a base value of €4.07 million (plus VAT) for the construction of the new pavilion.
The building will occupy approximately 2,200 square metres on the north-western side of the athletics track within the Zona de Lazer, creating another key sports facility alongside the existing swimming pools, athletics facilities and outdoor recreation areas.
The project represents one of the municipality's largest recent investments in community sports infrastructure.
Designed for a Wide Range of Activities
The pavilion will include a full-size 40 x 20 metre indoor sports court suitable for a variety of sports, together with spectator seating for 383 people.
Plans also include:
-
changing rooms for athletes, coaches and referees
-
a training and classroom area
-
a multi-purpose room
-
equipment storage
-
public toilet facilities
The design aims to provide a modern, flexible venue capable of supporting training sessions, competitions and community events.
Supporting Young Athletes and Education
According to the municipality, the new pavilion is primarily intended to support youth sport and increase opportunities for local clubs and schools.
The facilities are also expected to benefit students from the Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco (IPCB), providing additional indoor sports space for teaching and recreational activities.
By increasing capacity, the city hopes to encourage greater participation in sport while improving conditions for existing users.
Looking Beyond Local Use
As well as meeting local demand, the new pavilion could help Castelo Branco attract more regional sporting competitions and events.
Modern indoor sports facilities are increasingly important for hosting tournaments, training camps and school competitions, bringing visitors who also support local accommodation providers, restaurants and businesses.
The investment therefore has the potential to deliver wider economic benefits in addition to improving community facilities.
Part of Wider Investment in Sports Facilities
The municipality has also announced plans to improve the existing Municipal Pavilion near the São Tiago Health Centre, with future works expected to include roof improvements and an extension of the sports area.
Together, the projects form part of a broader strategy to modernise Castelo Branco's sporting infrastructure and support both grassroots participation and larger regional events.
