Summer Arrives as Pools and River Beaches Open Across Beira Baixa

Sports & Leisure

As temperatures rise across central Portugal, municipal pools and river beaches throughout Beira Baixa are opening for the 2026 summer season, offering residents and visitors plenty of opportunities to cool off and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

From family-friendly swimming pools to award-winning river beaches surrounded by forests and mountains, the region is preparing to welcome another busy summer.

Bathing Season Gets Underway

Several municipalities have already launched their summer bathing season.

Covilhã’s popular Piscina Praia opened on 15 June, while Castelo Branco’s Piscina Praia and the municipal swimming pool in Alcains are scheduled to open on 20 June. Across the region, local authorities have been carrying out final preparations to ensure facilities are ready for visitors during the warmest months of the year.

For many residents, the opening of pools and river beaches marks the unofficial start of summer.

River Beaches Remain a Regional Favourite

While the coast attracts many holidaymakers, Beira Baixa’s river beaches continue to be among the region’s biggest attractions.

Praia Fluvial da Fróia, in Proença-a-Nova, is one of the most popular destinations, known for its clear waters and scenic setting. Nearby Malhadal also attracts visitors looking for a peaceful escape in nature.

In Oleiros, the river beaches of Álvaro and Açude Pinto offer swimming areas surrounded by the natural landscapes of the Serra do Muradal, while Vila de Rei boasts several well-known bathing spots, including Fernandaires, Penedo Furado and Zaboeira.

These inland beaches provide a unique alternative to Portugal’s crowded coastline, allowing visitors to enjoy nature, fresh water and outdoor activities in a more relaxed setting.

More Than Just a Place to Swim

Many of the region’s river beaches have evolved into full-day destinations.

In addition to swimming areas, visitors can often find:

  • picnic and barbecue facilities

  • cafés and snack bars

  • walking trails

  • children's play areas

  • kayak and water sports opportunities

  • shaded woodland areas for relaxing

The combination of outdoor recreation and natural surroundings makes them particularly popular with families and visitors looking to escape the summer heat.

Supporting Local Tourism

The arrival of the bathing season also provides an important boost for local businesses.

Restaurants, cafés, accommodation providers and activity operators across the region often see increased visitor numbers during the summer months, particularly near popular river beaches and recreational areas.

For many rural communities, the summer season plays an important role in supporting the local economy and showcasing the natural attractions that make the region unique.

A Summer to Explore Beira Baixa

With warm weather forecast across much of the region and facilities now opening for the season, there has rarely been a better time to explore Beira Baixa’s rivers, lakes and outdoor spaces.

Whether you prefer relaxing beside a municipal pool, swimming in a mountain stream or discovering a new river beach, the region offers no shortage of places to enjoy the long summer days ahead.
